Today Turkey has lost one of its pioneering journalists, Mr. Mehmet Ali Birand at the age of 71 . He was columnist at Hurriyet Daily News (one of the two English-language dailies) , chief news editor and anchorman of private channel Kanal D. He was renown by his political TV show , ’32nd Day’ which he hosted since 1985.
He was suffering from pancreas cancer, however passed away after a so called ‘easy’ surgery to replace a stent.
Well, just so you know, it is not an easy stuff in Turkey for a journalist to be loved, admired and respected by the majority of the society . No matter what ideology they follow, almost all politicians (both Turkish and international) , world leaders, activists had interviews with him. He kind of raised so many renown Turkish journalists while co-working at 32nd Day.
His books and articles on foreign policy, especially on EU affairs, helped me a lot not only when I was an IR student but also after I started working as a journalist and editor.
May he rest in peace !
